I was originally appointed to the Board of Administration of LACERS by Mayor Eric Garcetti on February 25, 2013. I concurrently serve on the LACERS Benefits Administration Committee and as a Chair of the Governance Committee and a member of the Investment Committee. As a Board Member, I manage and administer the City of Employees’ Retirement Fund, invest the Fund’s assets, determine health providers and coverage for retired employees, and approve members’ applications.
Trustees United works on efforts to have companies adopt strong measures to ensure workplaces are free from sexual harassment and misconduct. As a founding member, I have helped Trustees United educate business executives on how hostile workplaces threaten the financial performance of the businesses in which their funds are invested and place their investments at considerable risk. The 10 Trustees serve on the board representing systems totaling $700B in assets under their management, including the California Public Employees’ Retirement System, the California State Teachers’ Retirement System, and the Los Angeles City Employees’ Retirement System.
As a Board Member of the Cal State LA Foundation, I advance the educational, cultural, scholarly, and creative activities and the role of community service of California State University, Los Angeles, by increasing private funding, responsibly managing donated resources and supporting the University and its diverse and distinct nature.
I serve as Chair of the Governance Committee and Member of the Investment Committee.
As a board member of ALPFA, I strive to further ALFPA's commitment to diversity. I serve as Chair of Governance where I develop board governance policy; as a member of the Compensation Committee where I establish and negotiate CEO compensation as well as develop and implement bench-marking goals for success; and I serve as a member of the By-Laws Committee where I collaborate with General Counsel to update our by-laws, which include development of new provisions to protect the organization and membership.
As a member for the Latino Corporate Directors Association National Board, I sought to raise the number of qualified Latinos in corporate leadership by serving as a resource for companies looking to diversify their boards with Latino talent.
Governor Brown appointed me to the California Architects Board, as a member of the public. I serve the public by advocating for policies that protect public health, safety, and welfare through the regulation of the practice of architecture and landscape architecture.
I was elected as the Vice-President of the Board.
First Latina Advisory Board Member in the 99-year history of this nonprofit organization, made up of the architectural licensing boards of 55 states and U.S. territories. Representing the voice of public opinion to the Board, I serve as a Member of the Diversity Committee, and as a Member of the Diversity Taskforce. I advise on diversity and inclusion to ensure admission programs in colleges and universities to maintain architect talent in the U.S. I also advocate for policies and procedures to protect California consumers.
I have served as the Director for Humanitarian Outreach Programs (HOPE). I directed efforts for a nonprofit program responsible for raising funds to build orphanages in underdeveloped countries worldwide. I served on the Board for three years providing guidance and direction on humanitarian efforts worldwide. I secured donations of hospital equipment and a medical team of 120 doctors, nurses, and medical personnel traveling to Central American countries on a humanitarian effort.
I have served in a leadership capacity as Board President, Board Secretary, and Fundraising Chair over four years, leading one of the largest mental health centers in the County of Los Angeles serving 25,000 patients annually. I provided change management and transformed the organization, establishing a sound and stable organization and securing gold standard recognition by Los Angeles County to serve mental health organizations in the county.
I presided over a nonprofit organization created to bring about a unified effort among food manufacturers and corporate leaders to provide holiday food annually to over 20,000 families living below poverty.
I served as the first and only civilian member of the Los Angeles City Latino Firefighters Board by assisting with a mentorship program and contributing volunteer hours to collect and distribute toys, food, and clothing to fire victims in Los Angeles.
Serving as Chair of the Governance Committee and a Member of the Investment Committee, I was appointed Commissioner for a program that oversees school-based medical clinics for the LAUSD student body of 650K elementary, middle, and high school students.
I developed wrap-around programs that provide eyeglasses, dental visits, vaccinations, and school medical physicals on school grounds to children.
I served in the Orange County chapter by assisting in the development of wellness programs to reduce smoking in the Latino and Spanish-speaking community. I contributed hundreds of hours and extensive volunteer support on numerous local ALA programs.
As a Founding Member and President of Avance Democratic Club, I seek to build Latino political power, increase Latino voter registration and civic participation, cultivate and develop Latino political leaders, and support candidates who champion the Avance agenda. I host and provide direction to various sponsored events and campaigns aimed at engaging the Latino community in the political sphere on a local, state, and national level.
Appointed by President Joseph R. Biden and by Xavier Becerra, current U.S. Health & Human Services Cabinet nominee and former California State Attorney General and U.S. Congressman, I was recognized as the top fundraiser for CA Democratic Party in 2020. My political and business acumen as well as my advocacy for minority equity and opportunity bring insight to the direction of the party's priorities.
As a Delegate of the Los Angeles County Democratic Party, I use my political and business acumen to provide expertise for community engagement and fundraising events. My cross-industry connections have augmented membership programming. I was recognized as Democrat of the Year for Assembly District 51 at the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Awards in 2019.
As a member of HOPE-PAC, I vetted and evaluated rising political candidates for local, state, and federal office. I raised funds to support to support education allowing Latina candidates to run for office effectively. I also hosted phone banks and leveraged support through grassroots campaigns and fieldwork in Washington, D.C., and Sacramento, California. I have educated and successfully influenced elected and appointed officials.
As the founder of LHLA, I have led planning, execution, and community relationship building efforts that have brought 40,000+ community members together year over year. I plan, organize, and execute cultural events by partnering with corporate and community sponsors to create experiences that engage, inspire, and highlight contributions made by the Latino community. Latino Heritage LA has united the Latino community in Los Angeles through various events during Hispanic Heritage Month.
I have forged strategic partnerships with top 100 companies such as Delta Airlines, AARP, Ford, ABC7, LA Times, and the Southern California Gas Company to produce successful cultural Latino Heritage Month events open to the public – attracting over 150,000 attendees and social media followers throughout the City of Los Angeles.
I proudly serve on the Board of Directors of Plaza De La Raza, the oldest Latino arts-focused nonprofit organization in Los Angeles. My excellent fundraising skills have made me a leading force on the Board. Using my connections with major corporations, I have brought much-needed financial support to this community arts and culture center. I have developed an ancillary review stream through venue rentals yielding 40% of annual revenue. I have also developed an innovative program that provides the children at Plaza with a complete book bag filled with all the essentials to start the school year with a winning attitude. A total of 800 children annually benefit from this program.
I co-founded a successful film festival that celebrated Latino-produced films from around the world and featured celebrity artists, directors, producers on roundtable discussions during Latino Heritage Month. I created promotional opportunities for film directors to produce and sell nine of 35 films showcased during Latino Heritage Month.
I served as Vice President of the Los Angeles International Latin Jazz Festival. I introduced Latin Jazz to the Greek Theater to reach the increasing Latin population in California, collaborated with leading Hollywood celebrities by leading the selection of talent and negotiating contracts, and managed international travel arrangements for specialized talents, such as Mongo Santamaria from Cuba, requiring authorization from the U.S. State Department and permission from other countries.
